GEA MADRE. Dalla terra all’uomo, dall’uomo alla terra

A few questions for Laboratorio Bìu

Let’s start from the roots, how does your story begin?

Laboratorio Bìu was founded in 2017 by Claudia Raisi, an architect-craftsman, and Mariano Pitzolu, an artistic blacksmith. We are a couple both in life and in our creative job, and we have created a space for reseach and production of site-specific objects and installations for performances, setups, and exhibitions. All our projects have their foundation in nature and sacred geometry, a set of mathematical, metaphysical, and aesthetic principles found in all matter of our universe.

Bìu is a Sardinian word that means ‘alive’ and in its simplicity includes our entire vision. It reflects our deep desire to create spaces and objects that, through their vital vibration, initiate a resonant relationship with everything around them.

How does nature inspire your projects and lifestyle?

Nature and its laws have always been the basis of the research guiding our work. In 2022, we launched a project related to sacred geometries, which are the same geometries found in our cells. This knowledge helps us recognize that there is no difference between what is outside and what is inside us.

This kind of deep understanding, which involves various levels of knowledge, allows us to achieve an increasingly profound awareness of our thoughts and consequently our actions. Every day, we strive to take one small step further in this direction.

The trip you most want to take.

It is the journey to become co-creators of our own lives. This journey begins in a specific place: where we are born, with a specific cultural and familial history, which are determining factors for the first part of our journey. Then, we start to become aware of who we are and what we desire. We begin to make our choices, which, moment by moment, will determine our path. We can stay still in one place or move to see ourselves reflected in places and people… the only possible compass on this journey is beauty. An Arabic proverb says: “The beauty you see around you is a reflection of the beauty within you.”

If you could make a tribute to the earth (soil), what would it be?

Water, a song, seeds, and fragrant flowers… We are trying to transform every project into an offering to Mother Nature and her elements.

If your project were music, what track would it be?

We believe that “Inverno” by Fabrizio De André poetically narrates what happens to the Earth during the most important moment of the seasonal cycle. The apparent winter death before rebirth. The deep sleep before awakening.

What does Avant gardening mean to you?

We like the expression Avant gardening because it is not a closed definition; rather, it contains an open question: what does it mean to evolve? What direction do we want to take? The current human condition and the environmental issues we are facing force us to ask this question.

For us, this evolution lies in retracing the paths of a distant past when man was deeply connected with the elements, which are manifestations of nature itself. To imagine the garden of the future, we must kneel down and listen to the heartbeat of the earth, light a fire and lose ourselves in its movement, notice the messages of the wind, drink water from a spring. From these experiences, we can imagine the evolved garden, the place where nature and human beings return to co-create.

Five words for you closely related to the concept of earth (soil).

Womb, roots, nourishment, healing, heartbeat.
