begin?
Ajadi / My story has always been, in a certain way, a story of greenery. Or perhaps, more precisely, it is the story of gradually realising that greenery has always been there. Many of my happiest memories, in fact, take the shape, smell, or colour of a plant: playing in Albania with snails in the shade of a vine, the sweet scent of elderflower while I was taking my first kicks at a football with my cousins, or the dense tunnels of cherry laurel I would pass through like secret passages. As a child, I spent a lot of time observing trees and constantly asking questions about how they lived, about what happened in their silent time.
I also remember a curious belief I had when walking in parks: I was convinced that they had existed before cities, and that settlements had only come later, built all around them, leaving those fragments of nature free to continue existing. Over time I understood that this was not the case, but that image continued to shape my gaze. Even today, when I design, I often return to that simple idea: imagining greenery that makes space for the city, rather than a city that merely tolerates greenery at its edges.
Curiosity became a conscious passion many years later, when I was living in Brasília. It was there that I understood that greenery could be conceived and designed, that behind every garden there is an act of imagination and responsibility. In asking myself how I might do it, I recognised something familiar: the possibility of transforming a sensitivity born among trees into a way of seeing and shaping the world.

Pietro / As a child, after school, my afternoons were spent in Valle Santa Croce, in a park not far from home. To my eyes it was an enchanted place: a small world where I could play at being Indians, explore hidden paths, and quietly observe the animals of the land and water. On weekends, I would instead follow my grandfather to his orchard, which he had named Settimino. Walking among the trees, he taught me the names of plants, the patient work of the land, and the ancient rhythm of the seasons, with their slow and continuous metamorphoses that transform the landscape.
Growing up in this way, in daily closeness to what we call “nature,” I discovered the deep joy of working with the living elements of gardens.

How do you imagine your “mental landscape” when you create? Are there any real or imaginary places that guide you?
Ajadi / One of the real places that most often emerges when I imagine my “mental landscape” is the garden behind my family’s summer house in Albania. In front of the house there is a tended, orderly garden: my father regularly cuts the grass, arranges the plants, keeps everything in balance. Behind it, however, the garden grows freely. The grass is tall and the plants intermingle. When I think of my mental landscape, I often return to that space at the back: a rebellious refuge, a garden that does not try to dominate nature but to coexist with its more unruly energy.

Pietro / My mental landscape is a border territory, a fluid ecosystem where geological memory meets pure imagination. When I create, I do not see static images but flows of energy and composing structures: I am guided above all by direct experience of the real places I pass through—fragments of landscapes I have visited, from which I draw an emotion, a scent, or a tactile memory. Among imaginary places, my mind inhabits the vegetation-reclaimed cities of Studio Ghibli, where greenery is not decoration but a force that heals the wounds of concrete. It is a landscape where technology yields to organic beauty. For me, creating means immersing myself in this “fertile fracture,” seeking to translate that sense of peace and mystery into tangible spaces.

Is there a recurring dream – or idea – that returns in your work?
Ajadi / The idea that often runs through my projects is the desire to communicate through vegetation. I am interested in thinking of greenery not only as matter to be arranged in space, but as a language. I would like my projects to make the story of nature’s times, forms, and relationships legible.

Pietro / My recurring dream is the “Gentle Reclamation”: an idea that guides all my work and sees design not as imposition, but as an opening. I do not imagine forests that destroy cities, but rather spaces where humans consciously step back to allow nature to reclaim its role, integrating discreetly into the cracks of the built environment. I imagine surfaces that cease to be sterile and become fertile grounds: pavements that allow grass to grow through, walls that host mosses, neglected corners that turn into micro-ecosystems.
The goal is to transform the everyday landscape into a mosaic of connected oases, where vegetation coexists with our habits without being reduced to mere decoration. My “Gentle Reclamation” is the dream of an environment where large maintenance efforts are no longer needed because balance has finally been restored. It is the idea of a world where greenery is not a temporary guest, but the true master of the house, capable of visually and functionally healing the spaces we inhabit.

How does nature inspire your projects and lifestyle?
Ajadi / Nature deeply inspires both my way of designing and my way of being in the world. Not so much as an aesthetic model to imitate, but as a set of attitudes and dynamics to observe and learn from. One of its qualities that strikes me most is its extraordinary capacity for adaptation. Plants teach us that every place, even the most difficult one, can become a habitable space if we are able to read the conditions that define it. Hence my focus on listening to the site, so that my projects can emerge from its characteristics rather than impose themselves upon them.
At the same time, nature shows a continuous tendency toward encounter and exchange, with its network of relationships, collaborations, and competitions that make ecosystems dynamic and alive. The value of cross-pollination has helped me imagine gardens and green spaces as open places, capable of evolving, welcoming differences, and generating new possibilities over time.

Pietro / Nature inspires my projects as a dynamic organism, not as a static picture. From Piet Oudolf, I learn that true inspiration lies in accepting the full cycle of life: I do not seek only flowering, but structure, the fragility of grasses, and the beauty of seeds that remain in winter. Designing means following the ecology of a place, creating plant communities that can self-regulate. Nature teaches me that imperfection is a higher form of elegance and that a garden is alive only when it attracts insects, birds, and change.
In my lifestyle, this philosophy translates into radical patience. Observing nature trains me to respect long timescales, to understand that not everything can be accelerated. It inspires me to live with less, prioritising material quality and connection to the land. Nature teaches me humility: I set the stage, but it plays the leading role. Embracing this rhythm means reducing the stress of control and rediscovering the value of waiting. My everyday life thus becomes an exercise in silent observation, where each season brings a lesson in resilience and regeneration.

Who are the people who have most inspired you artistically and professionally?
Ajadi / Two figures who have profoundly influenced the way I think about and design greenery are Roberto Burle Marx and Derek Jarman. The former was a decisive discovery during my stay in Brasília. I took on board the idea that a space can also be designed as a large living painting, conceived with the compositional freedom of an artist, and that plants are not merely ornamental elements but true expressive materials.
From Derek Jarman, on the other hand, I draw above all the idea that a garden can be a deeply personal, almost existential gesture. His work taught me the importance of designing with a place rather than against it: listening to its conditions, respecting its landscape, working with the species that naturally belong there. In his approach, the garden also becomes a cultural and political act, capable of expressing a worldview and a way of inhabiting the earth.
Alongside these figures, another key reference for my way of understanding plants is Stefano Mancuso. His work on plant communication and intelligence has radically changed my perspective: no longer silent, passive organisms, but living beings capable of relationships, adaptation, and complex strategies. This awareness introduces an additional dimension into landscape design, inviting us to consider the garden as a living community made of continuous interactions and exchanges.
Among these references lies my own way of thinking about landscape design: on the one hand the desire to compose space through an artistic gaze, on the other an ethical and sensitive relationship with the landscape and the forms of life that inhabit it.

Pietro / The figures who have most inspired me are undoubtedly Piet Oudolf, Bruno Munari, and Hayao Miyazaki. Three artists capable of offering new and astonishing visions of the landscape, even while working with completely different styles and tools. This distance, however, is only apparent: in reality, they share a way of seeing the world that is profound, attentive, and infused with wonder.
From Piet Oudolf I learned that beauty does not lie in the instant of contemplation, but in the continuous evolution of the process—cyclical yet always new. For Oudolf, even the fading of plants is a moment full of fascination: structure, autumn colours, and the bare forms of winter all speak of time passing. His teaching is to accept the cycle of life, the unstoppable flow of change, and transform it into landscape, enhancing its natural rhythms.
This vision is joined by the thinking of Bruno Munari, a master of simplicity. His lesson is that complicating is easy, while simplifying requires intelligence. Munari invites us to observe everything —even a tree or a stone —as a system of rules and creative possibilities, always seeking its essence.
Miyazaki, meanwhile, does not merely depict landscapes: he narrates them and makes them protagonists, giving them a soul. In his worlds, nature is alive and dense with memory.
Together, these three masters unite logic, material, and imagination, inviting us to create with a clear mind and a heart open to wonder.

If your way of designing were a dream, what kind of scenario would it be? Lucid, epic, silent, or collective?
Ajadi / It would be a dream that never fully loses contact with reality. The dreamlike dimension of my projects is what allows me to imagine new possibilities, scenarios that do not yet exist; lucidity, on the other hand, is what allows those visions to be anchored in the real world.

Pietro / If my way of designing were a dream, I would imagine it as silent and collective. It would be a dream of stillness, where the fertile fracture welcomes everyone’s passage, becoming a space of spontaneous encounter. I am not seeking the lucid perfection of drawing, but the clarity of a place that breathes and belongs to those who experience it.
