A few questions for Mimmo Totaro

Let’s start from the roots, how does your story begin?
I began my journey into the world of art as a draftsman in architecture studios. I experimented with various techniques, including stretched and plastered threads, ink drawings, etchings… until I moved on to spikes and threads and large outdoor installations.

Who are the people who have inspired you the most artistically and professionally?

Mario Di Salvo and Mario Radice for composition, Aldo Galli for graphics and etchings, Eli Riva for material knowledge and formal balances, graphic designer Max Huber, and certainly all the representatives of Rationalism.

How does nature inspire your projects and lifestyle?
Nature is an integral part of my way of living, and in its various forms, it always represents a deep source of inspiration.

If you could be the main character in a movie, which one would you choose?

It’s hard to choose just one. There are many directors who have engaged me: Pasolini, Fellini, Antonioni, Kubrick.

What is your definition of art?
Art is useless but it is everything we need to live.

Calm, peace, energy, vital warmth, fullness.

Bio

Mimmo Totaro, born in Como in 1948, trained at the Polytechnic University of Milan and collaborated with architecture studios for many years. Starting from 1971, his activity ranges from architecture to graphics and sculpture, with exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He participates in prestigious exhibitions such as the International Biennial of Tapestry.

Since 1991, with Nazzarena Bortolaso, he organizes “Miniartextil”. Together they founded “Arte&Arte”. He has received international recognition and has exhibited in numerous galleries and artistic institutions.
