Humus sapiens

by Ida Harm

[Concept]

The soil.
A living ecosystem that covers the earth and from which we derive 95% of our nourishment: a very thin layer that, like skin, protects the planet from temperature fluctuations and atmospheric changes, sequesters more carbon than forests, contains enormous biodiversity, retains water, and processes vital energy.

It is actually 30 cm that make the Planetary Garden possible, particularly the first 5-10 cm of fertile humus. Soil is a non-renewable resource that we are consuming at incredible rates. (P. Pileri)

Humus Sapiens is a minimal triptych installation that requires a bow to the ground. It gives dignity to the humble humus by bringing it to eye level, questions the concept of evolution (whose?), and grants “subjectivity” to the earth as a nourishing mother. To “restore to the term Nature its original meaning, that of the conditions in which we are born, otherwise we’ll have to be reborn tomorrow.” (M. Serres)
