Viaggio al centro della radice
A few questions for Cristina Barbieri
Starting from the roots, how did your story begin?
At the end of 2022, I began to take an interest in bioart, embarking on an immersive research journey into mycology, with studies aimed at obtaining the title of professional mycologist. I started working with organic materials such as mycelium and the fruiting bodies of fungi, finding my personal language to express myself and convey my art.
Who are the people who have inspired you the most artistically and professionally?
Without a doubt, nature, but I also draw a lot from Greek art. As for contemporary art, one person in particular has my total admiration, and he is the one who helped me delve into my essence to discover how to reach that light, that perpetual illumination, the one who taught me to see in the dark: Alberto Burri.
How does nature inspire your projects and lifestyle?
Nature inspires my style primarily cerebrally. Since I started studying, learning about, and working with organic material, I have ceased to feel alone, no longer alone in the world. On the contrary, I have understood that everything is truly connected. Most importantly, true inclusion lies in the ability to recognize and accept diversity.
The trip you most want to take.
At the moment, I don’t have any earthly destinations I wish to discover. Instead, I would like to take a shamanic journey, one that is all-encompassing: experiential and psychedelic.
If you could be the main character in a movie, which one would you choose?
It would probably be Mark Frechette and Daria Halprin in Michelangelo Antonioni’s *Zabriskie Point*, one of my favorite films. Two metaphysical and voraciously dreamlike glimpses that recall the Freudian duality of Eros and Thanatos.
If your project were music, what track would it be?
It would probably be an infrasound that evokes the activities of the underground, both dark and frenetic at the same time.
What does Avant gardening mean to you?
Starting from the meaning of the term “advanced,” which is “derived with modifications,” it is something that suggests to humans how to start considering the living organisms that inhabit the Earth as equals. We are all useful and all indispensable.
Five words for you closely related to the concept of earth (soil).
Rooting, stability, balance, nourishment, fertility.
