2 _ Spazio Gramaglia Brothers “Symbiosis”
A few questions to Laura Storero
Let’s start from the roots, how does your story begin?
Always passionate about the plant world, after high school, I chose to pursue studies aligned with this passion: a master’s degree in Landscape and Green Area Design. Later, to put into practice what I had acquired in books, I spontaneously decided to do an internship at the Fratelli Gramaglia Nursery. Today I am involved in the cultivation of edible plants for Michelin-starred chef Michelangelo Mammoliti and the development of green projects in the Langhe region.
Who are the people who have inspired you the most artistically and professionally?
I was inspired by some university professors and prominent landscape architects, particularly Pietro Porcinai, who created gardens in complete harmony with their surroundings. When I design I always keep in mind this quote by Gilles Clément: “The gardener is the true architect of the garden.” For me, this is exactly true because only with a deep knowledge of plants can you create a garden that lasts over time.
How does nature inspire your projects and lifestyle?
Nature is my world, my inspiration, my lifeblood. To design, one must observe nature: by doing so, one can take suggestions and inspirations.
The trip you most want to take.
I wish to visit Japan in order to see Japanese gardens whose compositional structure and techniques I admire. Like the fascinating Shak-kei, literally “the borrowed scenery,” which is about creating a two-way relationship between the garden and the landscape: the plants in the garden are modeled after the shapes of the surrounding landscape, and the vision of the landscape is incorporated within the garden composition.
If you could be the main character in a movie, which one would you choose?
I really enjoyed the movie The Pursuit of Happyness because of the willpower of the main character and the teaching he gives to his son. In particular, the sentence, “Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. If you have a dream you must protect it. If you want something, go and pursue it.”
If you could make a tribute to the earth (soil), what would it be?
If I could give something to the soil I would give it respect, preservation. Since ancient times, man has modified the soil for his survival, but he does so, especially in recent decades, with little respect for its fragility and vulnerability.
If your project were music, what track would it be?
Experience by Ludovico Einaudi, famous for its melodic complexity and therapeutic effect.
Which plant do you reflect yourself in and why?
The hackberry tree, Celtis australis, for its elegant bearing and the great strength of its root system.
What does avant gardening mean to you?
To me, it means dynamic gardening that can and should evolve sustainably according to environmental needs.
Five words for you closely related to the concept of land (soil).
Symbiosis, evolution, resources, consumption, resilience.
