Olobioma
project by Jonathan Arnaboldi and Matteo Pellicanò
//Ala Lario, Serra Platani
[Concept]
Olobioma invites one to cross a perceptual threshold and immerse oneself in a landscape that is normally invisible.
As in dreams, what usually escapes the eye emerges in an unexpected form, revealing a hidden universe that sustains and nourishes plant life.
Beneath the roots, beyond the surface of the soil, fungi, algae, bacteria, and microorganisms give rise to complex and dynamic ecosystems that rarely enter our everyday experience. Invisible yet essential, they operate as a hidden network that connects all living forms.
Born from the encounter between artistic and microbiological research, Olobioma transforms this hidden dimension into a sensory experience. Petri dishes and Winogradsky columns become windows onto microcosms in constant transformation—living landscapes that evoke imaginary gardens, primordial forests, or fantastical worlds generated by the unconscious. Colonies, stratifications, and proliferations create unexpected forms that seem to belong as much to the language of biology as to that of dreams.
The work invites us to question the boundary between observation and imagination. What emerges is at once scientific evidence and vision, natural phenomenon and symbolic figure. Microscopic structures transform into fantastical architectures, organisms into living constellations, and ecosystems into landscapes that seem to belong to a possible yet unexplored nature.
In this space of perceptual ambiguity, one is called to confront a form of life that eludes the usual categories of vision. Biological time becomes the material of the work: slow, unpredictable, autonomous.
Art and science thus come together in an open narrative where knowledge and wonder coexist, restoring visibility to what normally remains hidden and suggesting that every garden holds, in its depths, an entire universe of relationships, transformations, and possibilities.

A few questions to Jonathan Arnaboldi and Matteo Pellicanò
How did your story begin?
Always passionate about nature and the environment, we undertook our studies in agriculture at the Fondazione Minoprio Technical Institute. Over the years, multiple professional experiences have allowed us to mature and learn fundamental skills regarding our field. In particular, we have taken part in various competitions and exhibitions in historic gardens across the country…
